Giants? The Nephilim?

Hmmm...it's all coming together now. The following Bible passage takes place before the flood:

Genesis 6:1-8 (ESV)

6:1When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in [1] man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” 4 The Nephilim [2] were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

5 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the Lord was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

This passage is somewhat contended by Bible scholars; the phrase "sons of God" refers to angels when used in the book of Job, which would go along with the interpretation we see here. Others think that this simply refers to godly men marrying women from ungodly families and thus being morally corrupted. But since that doesn't help us out much, we'll toss it. (Also, the passage seems to distinguish the "sons of God" from men.)

Notice that footnote (2) identifies their offspring, the Nephilim, as "giants." This fits in well with this post-flood passage, which occurs when the nation of Israel is spying out the future land of Canaan:

Numbers 13:32-33 (ESV)

32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

So we can see that the Nephilim are indeed "giants" (Cortana letters, anyone?). Apparently they also exist after the flood as well as before (those angels don't give up, do they?).

Now, presumably these are fallen angels. In fact, the noncanonical (i.e. mostly forged) Book of Enoch elaborates on this. There's a lot there, so I recommend reading beginning in chapter 6.
