I've seen a code like that, I think it was called the "pig pen code". Each section of the pig pen represents a different letter or number. Here's the image included in post 705.
You can only get 9 letters (or numbers) out of this code without reusing the grid. In order to distinguish second and third uses of the grid, you just add a dot or something inside the part of the grid you're pointing to.
If "I" means "the first reuse of the grid", the symbol on G1 could be 15 or O. That's 9 letters in the first use of the grid plus six more in the second use. I propose that the answer for G1 is "O".
Alternately, this could be the 9th use of the grid -- "A" for the first use, and "I" for the 9th time through. That would mean that we're dealing with the number 78 (8 old uses * 9 parts of the grid, plus 6th position). In ASCII, 78 represents the letter "N".
