Well, to be honest, I'm not sure there's much relevance to what Tycho's original role was, except perhaps insofar as helping identifying certain terminal messages that aren't explicitly labeled as to their origin.
Durandal's menial role (doors, etc) is relevant in that it informs his attitude towards his job and how he responds to that through his rampancy. I don't remember whether or not Tycho's role as the science and engineering AI has much to do with what happens later, but as Tycho's role in the story gets more significant I'll try and watch for that.
I'm using the spoiler guide to try and avoid too much pointless wandering during the playthrough, but I'm actively avoiding using the Story page too much because I'm trying to recreate at least some of the feel of a "blind" playthrough, without all the disadvantages that implies.
