As far as I recall, the particular way the engine handles space (as a tree of edge-portals connecting polygons rather than conventional 3d geometry) means that, from a rendering perspective, there is no reason not to have 5d space. The extra work is in the map format, as the relationships between polygons have to be pre-sorted. An process that is only made to deal with non-overlapping geometry is simpler than one that takes overlapping into account. For example: doom's engine can technically render 5d space, but the way it's geometry is sorted doesn't allow it. You can however manually alter the map data and get it to produce 5d space, after a fashion. tldr: a really cool and deliberately expanded engine quirk
