The Box Set was a standard release from Bungie. Nothing limited about it to make it rare.
What probably makes it rare is that you found a mint one for $5. A decade ago you would have paid $100+ for one in mint condition. The people who want these now are the completist collectors of Bungie games.
Unless you have an old Mac with an old operating system then you won't be able to run any of the stuff on the CDs.
The only thing worth opening the box for now is the Marathon Scrapbook. But even that is on line now. Check the Story page for a link to the PDF version.
