This sounds like classic M2/MI behavior for critters on a moving platform.

One thing I noticed in both of the last two betas in Defend THIS!, and I may be misremembering this from playing Marathon back in the day, but originally in the area with four switch door puzzle giving the player access to the final repair switch area of the map, the two compilers would each stay stuck over their ammo caches until they caught sight of you at the switches, but in the betas (and M1A1) they come out after you when the Pfhor in the preceding corridor activate and they end up at the tail end of the critter conga line. Back in the day, I remember doing these long sidestepping runs at them until I could get close enough to punch the daylights out of them.
