Independent developer studios can get into E3 as long as they've gone through the proper channels and are recognized by the right people. In our case, we presented our business license to prove we're a legit company. I had the option of going as a student as well. My college offers a degree in game design that is recognized by the International Game Developers Association, and if I had not gone as Forever-Zero, I could have gone simply as a student. But going with my boys is much more fun. =) -S
