Why the Covenant want to wipe us out

Short version: They're pre-emptively stopping the Flood from using us as food/hosts. Long version: The Covenant have been fighting the Flood for some time, and are losing. They have also been aware of humans for some time, and have been studying us. They realise that we cannot withstand a Flood attack. The Covenant have found us before the Flood have, and human space lies somewhere between their spheres of influence. However, the Flood are spreading, so the Covenant fear that once the Flood find us (which could be soon), we're going to be taken over and used to feed the Flood and reinforce them. There's a lot of humans to act as hosts, so we'd swell the ranks of the Flood. We have FTL travel, so the Flood would spread rapidly once they found us. Our extra numbers may well swing the war decisively in favour of the Flood. So, the Covenant have no choice, and are wiping us out so that we don't feed the Flood. It's kind of like a firebreak, where fire fighters intentionally set a small fire to clear an area of combustible material in an attempt to stop a much larger fire from spreading. Ciarán.
