In Response To: Re: No Mod Chip Needed (Fuzzy) : correct, otherwise why would people have them I believe there's a CRC and possibly filesize check on the XBE, which has to be digitally "signed" by Microsoft with a 2048-bit key before an Xbox will launch the code natively. If you have a modchip and your DVD drive will read DVD-R(W) media, the last issue standing in your way is the ability to let your EvolutionX or whatever BIOS you have boot to your DVD. I don't personally own a modchip, so I should probably just shut up, but it seems to me that people FTP their files over to their Xbox so they can run games off the HDD (making loading times decrease and not burning a DVD-R(W) that might go to waste). :: "In theory, couldn't you just rip the DVD to a computer with a DVD burner" In theory, yes, even a normal DVD-ROM could "rip" the DVD. Probably how they get all those XBE files on eMule or eD2K. :: "edit the hex file there, and then burn a fresh, moded disk? Then the mod chip wouldn't be needed to rip the DVD to the X-box and FTP and all that junk" The modchip is still required, as the XBE would become "unsigned code". As soon as you touch one measly byte of the original Halo XBE, you've just caused the filesize and CRC result to change. Which means that you'll need a modchip to access the file anyways. :-( Bottom line is, if your launcher BIOS lets you boot unsigned code on a DVD, then it should probably work. But be prepared to waste a DVD-R or spend time writing to (and erasing) a DVD-RW if it doesn't work out. And it won't, if you don't have a modchip. [ OT: ]
