I agree to an extent, just like Sirlin was only writing with regards to certain situations. The facts are these: The developers made the game a certain way. This is the base, the most basic plateau of playing. You can argue that however the game was made is the way it should be played so anything that's possible is right. But you can also say that there are things which the developers WOULD have done, have they known about them disabled something, or changed something, or repaired a weakness/strength, but they simply weren't aware of it. Testing is not infinite. So you can argue that these things (which you obviously cannot predict for certain how are you goin to know what the developers wanted? but you can do your best, and use common sense) are essentially part of the game; they just weren't implemented correctly. The final stage would be to completely upend the game's rules, and that, I think, is what Sirlin argued against. These are the things that the developers clearly intended to be part of the game for example, a particular weapon but which you personally don't agree with. This CAN be legitimate. Maybe the way you and your buds play is such to render a particular move utterly unfair to the point of cheating, even if Bungie didn't see it that way. So you construct the rules to disallow that. Or maybe you form a particular ruleset to be more strict, more lenient, more professional, more severely skill-centered, whatever. Cool, though, of course, that isn't the basic Halo. The worst sort of playing is when a player ISN'T consciously changing the rules for a reason he just sees anything that he can't do, or beat, as unfair. Absolutely if you want to win, there's a certain way you should be playing. However, just as certainly, there are things which degrade the game, reducing the focus on skill. Yes, many "glitches" or mistakes can and should be utilized by players as if they were intended; they merely add another facet. But equivalently, there are some bugs so unbalancing as to be wrong (Akuma); and there are also other ways of playing, short of the high-stakes, high-skill, win-oriented style. You can play for fun, and construct whatever rules you want. You just shouldn't pretend you're playing for fun when you're actually trying to win. |
