this makes it all worthwhile

In Response To: My wife the investigative reporter... (Miguel Chavez)

: This Saturday, a dozen guys are going to waste each other. No, it's not a
: local fight club, but the latest in macho tech: a Halo Party. Played
: with the alien-splattering videogame Halo , Xbox's best seller, the
: parties involve up to 16 people simultaneously connected to four Xbox game
: consoles (with system link cables). Players team up for carnage-filled
: rounds of virtual games like Capture the Flag or Slayer. The thrill?
: "You hear the agony of the person you just killed," says
: Sega.com design manager Josh Milligan, who powered up the effects for a
: recent gathering by hooking the Xboxes to projectors and plugging the game
: into the surround-sound systems. "I have a ton of friends who are
: asking about the next [party]." - Noah Robischon

this is particularly awe-inspiring when you consider it in the context of the game's development. occasionally while playing 8v8 assault games at bungie we became disheartened, because we felt that very few people would ever get to experience that kind of gameplay. I personally thought that there might be an occasional college dorm wired for ethernet where they'd play... but 99.999% of all halo players would just be stuck with 2v2 slayer, at the most.

none of us ever really dreamed that xbox LAN parties would enter the mainstream. it's certainly a validation of the goals we were shooting for with halo, and of the concepts behind xbox and its future. really, really cool to see - and it's people like you guys who make it all possible!

in fact, words fail me when I think about Ar-Isildur wanting to celebrate the end of his chemo sessions and deciding to hold a halo LAN party with his friends. I'm just sorry that more of us bungie folks couldn't attend - congratulations, brian, and I hope you have many happy halo sessions ahead of you. :)
