I've had a similar thing happen on a higher skill level.
I parked a warthog at the entrance to the building on Silent Cartographer. So the gunner could shoot at the gold elite as I was coming back up.
When the gunner fired, the elite ran at the warthog, but he got stuck running at the front of it. I just came from behind and killed him. He never even turned around, because the passenger was shooting him, too.
However, the next time I played this area, the two marines got sliced and diced before I blew the elite away with a rocket.
