I'm not waving it off. I'm just saying that it is simply an evolutionary step in how we play multiplayer, and that it is nothing new. I played Quake on LAN back in 1996, nearly a decade before I got XBL to play Halo 2 online. Networked games have existed long before the likes of Doom and Quake, dating back at least to Maze War, which was released four decades ago. All the major innovations in gaming have existed since at least the 80s or earlier. Everything since then has just been stepwise improvements.

"Meaningful" and "powerful" do not necessarily equate with "revolutionary," though. While there have been amazing qualitative improvements to gaming over the last several decades — from Computer Space to Pong to Space Invaders to Pac-man to Super Mario Bros. to Final Fantasy to Street Fighter II to Doom to Super Metroid to Ocarina of Time to Super Mario 64 to Halo to GTA to Shadow of the Colossus to Watch Dogs and everything in between — fundamentally very little has changed in how we play games.
