Networking is a pretty big and sophisticated field that I wouldn't just wave off like that.

I agree with you there in general, I've even used that quote on here before, but I think solutions to new problems or deficiencies, even if they make significant use of materials, objects, techniques or ideas that already existed, can be just as meaningful and powerful as new things themselves, and in fact they often are new ideas or lead to new things.
