In Response To: No worries (SonGoharotto)

: So as you say, it seems like a
: cheap ploy to distract from Greece's own massive problems.

I was saying that's not what it is. :P

That's what someone who doesn't have a more complete grasp of the situation would say, for example Angry Joe (note how he makes fun of "Greece's Enemies", despite the fact that Greek fighters are scrambled to intercept Turkish ones encroaching on their airspace almost every single day, both sides carrying live weapons.)
We're not talking about ancient 3rd world technology either.
The Hellenic military is equipped with the latest versions of the Lockheed-Martin F-16C Fighting Falcon and the AH-64D Longbow Apache attack helicopter.
While the Turkish Military is also equipped with the Lockheed-Martin F-16C Fighting Falcon (mostly produced within Turkey under license, one of only 4 countries to do so and many of which are being upgraded to the newest standards) and the new Boeing 737 Peace Eagle AEW&C (AWACS) jet.

Turkey are also a Level 3 Partner in the F-35 Lightning II program.
When they obtain that (assuming they don't cancel their plans for 100+ aircraft) they will have complete air domination over the Aegean.

Of course, Lockheed-Martin are offering the F-35 Lightning II to the Greeks as well.
It's good business supplying both sides after all, and the Hellenic Air Force needs the F-35 to maintain the status quo.

Anyway, the quality of the photos isn't very relevant, nor is the ability to get satellite images from the likes of Google maps (which, for the record, cannot see inside hangars or provide up-to-date information. Guess what, there are also no Google Street View options for these locations!)

Consider this. You can take photos on a good digital camera, go to your hotel, open up a laptop and email them all within an hour or so.
This is more up-to-date information on a specific target than even the US Government was able to obtain a mere 15 years ago.
A spy-plane like the U-2 or SR-71 had to reach it's target, take its pictures, and then fly back to its base before they could be processed.
Photos that were a few hours old were 'golden' in the 80's.
It wasn't until the late 90's that real-time images became possible.

Google Maps images are months or even years old depending on the locations.

Greece did not have those massive problems back in 2001, yet those 12 were still arrested and ultimately found guilty before their convictions were finally overturned (under massive political pressure from the UK and the Netherlands. That was a big, drawn out fight as well).

The point is, those signs and warnings are not there for a joke. They never have been.
They have always been strictly enforced.
This is something they would have done regardless of their domestic and economical problems.
They've done it before when they weren't factors.

It's like Groomlake (Area 51).
You can see it all from above on Google Maps, but just you try entering the patrolled exclusion zone and taking photos.
Best case scenario, you'll be arrested.
Worst case, you'll be shot.
