: I'm betting that much of this will be handled in Silentium and K-5 book 3.
: Sure, 343i has said that story is important and that they want to make
: their games be a stand alone experience, but I won't complain if they end
: up being things that you can only understand by having read the previous
: books. Maybe I'm an elitist in that way, ormaybe I understand that most
: people don't care about SP and that I appreciate the care that story is
: given in general.

No! Nonononono. Please no.

I've been reading the books from day one, and I could not disagree with you more. The reason Bungie didn't include content from the books was because they didn't want to alienate those who hadn't read them. I like the inclusion of that content, but I think it has to be done in a way that is inclusive, not exclusive. If we want new people to enjoy the singleplayer, we have to make it accessible. Halo 4 is definitely not this.

"Most people don't care about the singleplayer," so let's not give them a chance to? The Zero Punctuation review of Halo 4 - and Halo 3, for that matter - would have been far more positive if he'd been able to follow the events of the game. Even we, members of a community proud of its understanding of the universe, are still working out what exactly happened and why. If Halo's mass appeal is its multiplayer, then its singleplayer will suffer. If we want 343i to care about the stories we're getting, they have to be comprehensible to new gamers. They need to do what Bioware did with Mass Effect 3 and provide the opportunity to learn about the events through playing the game.
