What is that purple thing on the Spartan 4? (on the small of his back attached to the top of his nappy plate)

Then look at halo4_forerunner_bts_esrb.wmv around 10:34. The chief has something on the small of his back, it may be attached to the top of his nappy plate. Its gray and may be the UNSC version of the purple, Covie?, thing on the same place on the Spartan 4.

Any idea what it could be? Is it an armor ability? If so, which one? Or are they different abilities?
