You can choose the release date shipping option when you pre-order games on Amazon. They'll ship it however many days ahead of time are needed for it to arrive on release day.

It's true that there is the potential for something to go wrong in shipping, causing a late arrival. But in my experience, games have always arrived on the correct day. And I've heard of some rare instances where the shipping went quicker than Amazon accounted for, and people received theirs a day or two early.

The only major downside to Amazon's release date shipping is that, while you will almost certainly get it on the correct day, you won't get it immediately at midnight the way you would from a brick-and-mortar store. You'll get it at whatever time the UPS truck comes around. For me, it happens that the UPS truck normally comes through between 4:30pm and 5:00pm, so it doesn't really work for games that I'd like to take release day off to play - by the time it arrives, I'm off work anyway. It is great for non-vacation-time games though. :)
