: Essentially being a contra-rotating helicopter, there is little reason why it
: shouldn't be able to fly. Aerodynamics and control surfaces don't really
: apply to helicopters as such, aside from the design of rotors.
: Afterall, the Rolls-Royce Thrust Measuring Rig, nicknamed the Flying
: Bedstead, managed to fly in the early 50's, and eventually paved the way
: for the Harrier and its Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine.
:

: So, as with absolutely anything to do with VTOL, the key factors for getting
: something the shape of the Falcon off the ground are the weight of the
: vehicle versus the thrust that rotors that size could produce.
: Could be a few balance tweaks as well, but that's not such a problem. We're
: not above using ballast in modern aviation, but its better to achieve that
: with weight distribution of avionics, fuel, etc rather than dead weight.

Agreed; the Falcon is entirely plausible.

In fact, of all the Halo aircraft recreations I've ever done, the Falcon is the only one I didn't really have to fudge anything on. I did have to guesstimate on the weight, based on weights and sizes of other vehicles in Halo, but all the engines are well within currently available technology, unlike the Hornet. The turboshafts driving the propellers generate about 5000 horsepower each and the jet engines each make 1500 pounds of thrust, both of which currently exist today. The V-22 engines make 6150 horsepower, and newer engines can make the same power in a smaller package.
