Her reply hurts mah brain... if it had a totally smooth outer surface, how would you manipulate the inner layers? Just through the one exit hole? It would be sheer luck to know when you had the layers lined up, unless it were translucent. If you want, I can help you model the appropriate gaps/clearances to make a tester-model via Shapeways! If you make it in any of the plastic materials, you can model interlocking-features that you couldn't otherwise assemble. They even have one that's slightly translucent.
