In Response To: Well, this is it *IMG* (TDSpiral)

As Levi said, you'll get what you put into it. Be sure to not get burned out. Also be sure to remember the importance of the difference between being burned out and being tired.

Get enough sleep. That is the one most common mistake college freshmen make, and it's a bad one. Your cognitive functions (and especially your creative abilities!) decline with sleep deprivation, and yes, that counts even if you only miss a couple of hours' worth each night. It's a big deal. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, especially yourself. The signs are very subtle, in your mind, but they're there.

Stay hydrated. Another big one missed by freshmen. Mountain Dew and Cheetos and pizza and they think they're good to go, but the human body doesn't work that way. Water. Water water water water water. Why? Ask a nutritionist. You'll probably have one on campus somewhere, their office likely located near the campus gym. Headaches suck, so avoid them.

Plan ahead. Plan out having wholesome good times on the weekend, and with this busy new schedule of yours, get in touch with people ahead of time (like, a WEEK ahead of time) and know what you're going to do before you get there because otherwise more often than not it will not happen or you will be doing it alone.

This was fairly obvious to me but it is not to many people: don't fall into temptations to do stupid things. Drugs are such an enormous waste of health, money, time, and potential. Yes, even the "not so bad" ones and the over the counter ones. Just save yourself the misery, the shame, and the regret and tell the person "Screw you" before they ever get to ask you. Same goes with alcohol. There is a responsible way to interact with alcohol and it does not include risking getting caught drinking underage nor does it include drinking too much once you're 21. Drinking that much in no way improves your life. Even if it did, you wouldn't be able to remember it, so it goes right back to not being something that can improve your life. Discretion, discretion, discretion. I am very glad that I erred on the side of caution; I know several many people who did not, and they're STILL paying for it, 10 years later!

I found that it was way easier to stay on campus and do all of my homework and such BEFORE I left to go home, than it was to go home, get comfortable (and distracted), and then find the time to motivate myself to do homework. Ride the wave of momentum from having to do all that academic stuff earlier that day and finish it out as much as you can before you go home. Use how fresh it is in your mind to your advantage. One very important reason for this is that you need to separate your "work life" and the rest of your life. Otherwise, you WILL get burned out. So if at all possible, even if it's crazy inconvenient, make it so that when you get home, you're home. You're not still at "work". Life's too short not to, though you're probably too young to really have life's brevity forced into your everyday consciousness, so you're likely to still burn out a few times before you get sick of it.

As for the girl, man, I am not you and I am not all-knowing, so I don't know if you've just met a mere friend, a mere fellow student, or the love of your life, but I will say this: if you ever do meet a girl that could really be the person that you spend the rest of your life with, no degree or office or honor will compare with her. A human being that loves you is infinitely valuable, a piece of paper that gets you certain kinds of jobs is not. That has measured, metered-out value. There are plenty of miserable, wealthy people in the world. Don't make the choices that they made. Your youth is more finite than your life; exhaust it completely, the way you might exhaust your breath after laughing so hard you lose it. And take lots of video and pictures while you do, for when you'll need them later.

That's it from me for now, bro. This information I've given you... I learned it the hard way. You're having this handed to you on a silver platter. I wish someone had told me these things. Especially the youth and time management part. Because now I can't get it back. And neither will you be able to. So don't waste it! Spend it well! And may it go with you as I would want it to go for me were I standing in your shoes. God bless you.
