Yes, I use alot of Autodesk (CAD, Maya, 3DSmax) as part of my job. I used sketchup because it's toolset lends itself well to the sort of challenges that present themself in this sort of model. I can quickly pump out block after block of low poly, low detail urban environments, but still have the flexibility to add detail and embelisments where they're needed (like turf) It's a bit of a shame that it deals with high poly counts so poorly though. I have to build block by block in separate files, then conglomerate them into a master model when I'm done with each section. I learnt this the hard way with some sections of the old city, as it there were 1-2 second lag times on every line/push-pull/extrusion I've been slowly chipping away at this for more than two years now, a half hour here, an hour there, and have been slowly adjusting my practices so that i can get good detail, but with fewer polys, and without crashing my computer in the process. I fear the day they release Sketchup 9 :(
