Whispers of the future.

In Response To: Re: A Fistful of Arrows (pages 52-55) (Archilen)

: My thoughts exactly. There's so much going on in every panel beside just
: advancing the story - it's quite rare (at least in terms of Halo comics)
: an artist can both keep the details consistent and still produce
: stylistically unique, phenomenal artwork. 343i has used artists'
: individual styles as an excuse for the lack of fictional accuracy in
: visuals, but Levi's work nullifies any claim that you can't have both
: unique style and consistency.

: When I look at Ruiz's work on the TFoR comic, I see an assembly line
: production where the artist seemingly wanted to get each panel and the
: details over with as soon as possible. In contrast, every panel in AFoA is
: rendered in loving detail not only on an artistic level, but also in terms
: of canonical accuracy. Unlike in nearly all of the official comics, at no
: point do I need to start wondering why there's something that shouldn't be
: there. Not only that, but all the little details do a good job of
: grounding the comic into the universe we see in the games, while displaced
: visuals always create a sense of disconnection.

: I think 343i should compare this with the comics they've churned out, and
: realize the bar has been raised for their future releases as well. It's
: not that their comics were bad (with the possible exception of TFoR, that
: one's been pretty substandard so far), it's just that they're very
: unimpressive compared to AFoA. And this was made by a person who doesn't
: even get paid for it! I don't, however, believe it's even possible for an
: outsider with little knowledge of the Halo universe besides reference
: images, to reach this level of in-universe detail - it definitely takes a
: hardcore fan. As such, the only thing 343i could do if they want to avoid
: further goofs in their comics and make the fans happy is to hire Levi.

One of the main motivations for going out to HaloFest is try to convince them about those last two words. :)

: On a related note, Levi, are you still planning that story bridging the gap
: between H2 and H3 after you're done with AFoA? Would absolutely love to
: see that.

After FoA is complete, I need to finish work on my Anubis comic illustrations, and probably try to do some commissions or freelance jobs as well, because I am in desperate need of money. I'm kinda embracing the 'starving artist' mindset this month with Fistful of Arrows to try and finally finish it, as in I actually turned down a freelance job to work full time on it. And I'll need to make up for that afterwards.

But I have a feeling my Halo love will not die anytime soon, heh, so I'm sure after a bit, I'll be starting work on another project. There are a few I have in mind right now, that's been filling up random word documents and sketchbooks:

-"Halo 4: Shield and Sword" - my own personal take on what Halo 4 could be - with storyboards, story outlines, concept art, level maps, and more. It wouldn't be a comic - more like a bloated design document.

-"Halo: Truth and Reconciliation" - a storybook for adults tracing the entirety of the Halo story. That's the 'Truth' part. Another big motivation of this storybook would be to try and 'Reconcile' anything that seems conflicting with the Halo canon. I would also give glimpses of the Legends stories as if they had been in 'real life' (which is what I call Bungie's aesthetic - the heart of the Halo visuals). Imagine the Duel, Package especially, if they had been Halo 2 cutscenes, for example. I think it would make people appreciate the inner story involved with those animated shorts, and also like the anime shorts themselves better if they knew what they were interpreting and having fun with.

-"Halo 3: The Long Dark" - a comic like Fistful of Arrows that would begin as Halo 2 ends, and end when Halo 3 begins. Earth is in eternal dark (metaphor) as the Covenant invades and conquers our native lands - but hope remains as Miranda, Johnson, Arbiter and the Chief draw closer to the turning point of the war. You would literally see almost EVERY character in the Halo trilogy (including ODST) involved in this. It would be awesome. The Battle of York alone would be worth it, alone.

But honestly, while I'll continue to do these things no matter what, I would love to work with 343i and make these things real. I'm going to see if I have the opportunity to suggest working with them on these projects at HaloFest. Wish me luck! :D
