It's been a while since I've played through the : campaign and my memory is a little fuzzy this morning. : - CC I think the Gravemind knew from ages past that the Ark was something that built the Halo rings. He could have gleaned it from Forerunners he absorbed. He might have surmised that another was being built. One thing the Gravemind did not know is that Cortana had the activation key from a Halo ring. Cortana might not have known Gravemind knew she sent a transmission, but it's heavily implied in Cortana's message that the Gravemind could have been eavesdropping: "I can't tell you everything. It's not safe...the Gravemind...it knows I'm in the system."
