In Response To: Re: The hell with it! (vlad3163) : TIE Interceptor ftw. It got to be about the only ship I would use in the : original game. Excellent speed, crazy fast weapons, but no defense. Makes : me wish they'd either do another Rogue Squadron game, or a new X-Wing vs. : TIE fighter (as the first one was a bit before my time). Nothing comes close to the TIE Defender though. Rare as it was and absent from the console games.
Faster and more agile than an A-Wing, with shields as strong as an X-Wing and more firepower than a B-Wing, its the Star Wars equivalent to the F-22A Raptor.
I would still recommend X-Wing Alliance to people, the final entry in the X-Wing series.
Combine XWA with the fan-made X-Wing Alliance Upgrade models, and the game doesn't look too bad even now. They turned this:

Really quite enjoyed the story in it too, very original compared to a lot of the games set between ESB and RotJ, with two plots going on together. Your characters obligations to the Rebel Alliance, and to his family which sees you flying transports. Spent soooo much time with that game.
Lots of little tie-ins to other bits of the EU as well, plus the mission based around Shadows of the Empire from a different perspective.
