But seriously, If they're gonna try and play that like it appears, the only thing that comes to mind is the cannon...

Cortana being a "smart" AI would only have an opperational life-span approximating 7 standard years. That is due to the fact that as an AI (referencing the 'smart' variety) becomes "older" they begin to accumulate too much data and eventually "think" themselves to death via Rampancy (there have been other explantions, but this is the one I'm using for this theory). Cortana, especially after all the information accumulated on the Halo arrays as well as while in the thrall of the Gravemind, has FAR exceeded the recomended amount of information in a shorter period than that of other AI's.

That being the case, I would postulate that, perhaps as a self defense mechanism, Cortana has been using the interveneing time between the end of 3 and the begining of 4. To somehow... ...format her core databanks (or whatever the analog would be) in an effort to give herself more time to find a way to retain all her knowledge without destroying herself in the process.

But still, I think it is simply a pre-rendered design error, akin to the bubble shield generator in that Halo 3 trailer.
