Not talking about the armor here, but Bungie was smart in bucking the trend of grey, black, and brown that games like Killzone and Gears were going. Their explanation was that Halo has always had a certain style and feel to it, with vivid colors and details. Also if I'm remembering correctly, they used this explanation in describing why they decided to make Master Chief's armor continue with the aesthetic flow of the previous games as opposed to that bumpy/gritty version. Continuing the flow of continuity, even with graphical upgrades, is important.
