Agreed. These designs are way too over-the-top to be taken seriously, so I'm glad they went with a more faithful design. It's sort of sad to see how little the artists bothered to make any research on the universe (as evidenced by descriptions like "plasma sword thingy" etc). It's quite clear that they were more concerned with things looking "cool" than how they're actually supposed to work or fit the universe.
For another example, I recall seeing (on the Halo wiki, I think) a design sheet of the MJOLNIR armor which was labeled as "Master Chief Spartan" or something of that effect.
