Trees aren't any different from any other scenery object, and I don't see why you think we need to generate new lightmaps. Sandbox looks just fine even though the stone blocks don't actually cast shadows, and trees aren't much bigger than objects we can already place in Halo 3. Objects can cast shadows, so trees don't necessarily even need prerendered shadows. Given how Reach can render 4x or so the number of polygons per scene that Halo 3 can, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Reach can render more shadows in real-time, too. There's nothing technical stopping Bungie from including trees or rocks or any such things.
