You prime the grenade by pressing the button in, as the Master Chief did in the E3 video. Once the button is released, the timer starts for it to attach itself to something. The detonation timer starts when either the grenade has attached itself to something or it comes to a stop. The Chief simply didn't release the button until he and Cortana had their little moment.
