I don't understand why he couldn't have : just held off the covenant long enough for his guys to evac, then just use : his bad ass jet pack to get into orbit. That makes sense when you think about it logically, but I think it all has to do with the Cole Protocol. Even if he could have easily done all of that and gotten out no problem, the Cole Protocol dictated certain things, and thus he intended to carry out those orders to their full extent (and regain his humanity).
