Perhaps the confusion about whether this new protagonist is a Spartan-II or III is exactly what Bungie intended. If you take the license plate easter egg that was found a while ago to be what it's thought to be, then the new player-character is probably KNS-000X, so we purposely can't see what class of Spartans he (or she, but I'll say "he") is in. The X is probably meant to be a variable, too. What I'm saying is that maybe the whole idea behind this new character is that he's meant to be ambiguous because you can fill in the armour with whatever your imagination feels like, be it an S-I, S-II, S-III, or even as S-IV if you want. It could be made to feel like it's you behind the helmet, whoever you choose to be, which makes in a "first-person" shooter on another level. The game itself is a prequel to the Halo trilogy, but it's being released after, which explains the "lone wolf" comment: Chances are that you, the player, have played through some portion of the Halo games before as Master Chief, who was always the only Spartan in the games (the only Spartan-II, anyways) and hardly relied on anyone else in battle. So you are actually the lone wolf Carter-259 is talking about. This further supports the idea that the player is the one behind the mask. Or maybe they did the things the way they did because you get to create your own character like in Mass Effect, with face customization and background-story selection and everything! Or maybe the character will be like Master Chief, having a backstory but never showing his face to allow for a degree of fantasy. Or I could just be completely wrong. Who knows! (: Also, I'm pretty sure this isn't the opening cutscene, at least not in its entirety.
