They are rushed twice by the Brute - once right beside a roaring waterfall, and the second time atop a mountain, while her AV is directly engaged with the sniper rifle. If she were listening for him either time, sure, she might have picked it out ver the other noises. Secondly, the Brute is protected by his helmet and his skull. He's a brute. Go melee one in the face once and see what he does. Thirdly, it's a "movie," as it were.
