I don't know if straight-up fighting between the two would be quite appropriate. There certainly was a lot of hatred, but during the battle of Reach they were still on the same side.

I can totally see this scenario, however:
There's a squad with, say, three elites and three brutes. You kill two of the elites, upon which one a hammer brute strikes the remaining Elite in the back, saying something along the lines of "Oops! HAHAHA"

I can't really see the reverse happening, though. The Sangheili are very honor driven, so as much as they may hate the Brutes, they won't kill one... Unless, of course, they witness something like my little scenario above. I'd love to see an Elite, enraged by a Brute's treachery, whip out his sword and run the Brute through, roaring something to the effect that Brutes suck and should never have been let into the Covenant.
