In Response To: Please, can someone clarify... (stan) : How is this Skybox different than the open space above the oil rig in that : one map with the oil rig? And not to look a gift horse in the map-editing : tool, but why a special "skybox", why not just let us build : whatever we want on ground level, or let us build up vertical like in the : sky right above the map (in other words, seamlessness; or maybe the skybox : will integrate seamlessly with the ground portion of the map, I'm not : clear on that)? As someone who has forged a lot in the sky above Blackout, I can tell you Sandbox is something to get excited about, and it is an absolute improvement: 1) not having to save-quit to place objects in the sky, 2) not having to worry about players landing on the map below and living, 3) a much bigger space, 4) a helpful grid, 5) better lighting (IMHO) : To be honest, Bungie's approach to Forge reminds me a lot of the second
You can really see an evolution in Forge since Halo 3 came out. The first forged maps had cosmetic items--camping stools, barrels. Just stuff to decorate or throw around, and just about everything moved when shot. Then people got creative and started placing crates on top of teleporters over the edge on Narrows to make little floating platforms. So Bungie probably looked at that and thought, "hmm, maybe we should give them objects that lock in place so they can make real floating platforms" And the map packs since then have had those objects, along with a map (Foundry) dedicated to forging. But people keep trying to make new gametypes and new crazy maps and we're just confined in that little warehouse. Sandbox really looks like a long-term solution. I don't think in 3 months we're going to be saying "we need another forge-friendly map!" You're asking why Bungie didn't predict 2 years ago that this is where Forge would end up? I'm just glad they've responded to the community by producing these maps, and you can bet they won't forget "lessons learned" in their future projects. Yeah it'd be great if we had locking objects on valhalla, but whatever. At least we have them now.
