There has been evidence. I stated that before, Sif, Mack, Wellsley, Deep Winter, Beowulf, all had different avatars, that they themselves chose. There has been a lot of canon that is interwoven into the books and games. One example is the 8th (Cortana Terminal) references "The Fall of Reach" when Dr. Halsey uses a coin to test John ("It was the coin's fault! I wanted to make you strong, keep you safe. I'm sorry. I can't".). The books give more information than the games can offer, though this isn't to say that there aren't inconsistencies.

I also don't see how being good at playing Halo makes you more adept at understanding the story. The ability to no-scope or win sword-duels or take down a hunter does not offer any greater insight or appreciation of the story. Also why should an AI that does not resemble Cortana be considered "retarded" and why would it go against "the way 'things are supposed to be'"?

No one but Bungie (and Frankie) knows "the way 'things are supposed to be'".
