In Response To: Re: I know what I'm getting... (Tobin) Oh, also.... On the whole Xbox vs Gamecube issue.... I can buy a very powerful console, with some really strong launch titles and lotsa titles in development, or a weaker console, with a weak launch but with some games coming out in a year that might be good, and a few games that are must haves. Hmmmmm..... decisions decisions...... While nintendo is stepping away from the proprietary cartrige format, the minidisc setup it is going for STILL puts limitations on the devs. Sure, it's no longer a cartriges, but when your cutting costs, do you want a 2 dvd game or a 6-8 miniDVD game? Packaging isn't cheap. For third party dev's, that eats into profits, and that's never good. Also, the cube can't play DVD's. Nintendo's strength is in it's licensed titles. I honestly think that at one point, I'll own a gamecube. But not anytime soon, 'cause I honestly don't feel that at this point there's anything worth buying. Now, when the cube has Link, Mario, and le madam Samus Aran, well..... we'll talk in a year or so. The downfall of Nintendo is, for the most part, they've tended to aim for the younger market. I'm not in that market, and those titles don't appeal to me, making the big N's offering yardsale or pawnshop bait for me. Also, historically, the newer N systems have had limited 3rd party support; although with things patching up between N and Square, and the advent of Sega as a 3rd party on the cube, this very well could be a change starting with the cube. Contrast that with the xbox. It uses the standard DVD format, and it can aloso work as a DVD player, so you save on packaking. Then, you have the guts. FYI, the xbox is NOT a crippled pc.....but this image is the biggest stumbling block facing MS (in addition to the MS name itself). The xbox has a great hardware spec, but a limited software library, and no real exclusive licences (save Oddworld, off the top of my head). It does have some awesome launch titles, and their are loads of 3rd party devs onboard.... but a lot of their offering are probably going to be crap. At this point, it's anyone's guess how the good the software library for the xbox will be a year from now. Third party titles can make or break a console (ask sony) but it's too soon to tell which it will be. |
