In Response To: Re: Halo Gameplay Impressions (slumbermonkey) I'm a pc person by nature, so I wanted to respond to this. I've had this debate some, myself. Having seen the game in the flesh, and having played quite a bit of the current generation of pc titles, I can honestly say that you're going to need a high end system to run Halo when it gets released for the desktop market. It's just speculation on what the specs are going to be right now.... but, I think they're going to be high. If you are a hardcore pc gamer, and you've got a killer rig right now, chances are the only thing you'd be upgrading in the near future is a new video card, and/or a slight processor upgrade. If that's the case, the xbox might not be that attractive a deal. Sure, it's a nice system....but money is money. If you can wait, upgrade the video card (for something close to the price of the xbox)... On the other hand, if your computer sucks.... the hardware in the xbox is worth more than the price you pay for it. The entire unit alone costs less than a really high end video card. Buying halo and an xbox together will most likely cost less than the hardware required to play halo (at a decent resolution and framerate) on the pc. Sure, you can play other games on the pc....but, then again, you can play other games on the xbox. And a decent MB, processor, memory, and video card aren't cheap. The software library for the xbox is the big unknown right now. Sony could tank this season (no, that won't happen, this is just an illustration) and you'd still have great stuff coming out for the PS2 for a year or so. The pc market, while not as widespread as the console market, isn't going anywhere; there are a lot of great games on the pc, there are a lot of great games coming for the pc. The Xbox is the great unknown.... how much great stuff will come out on it? Also, the major difference from Xbox Halo and PC/Mac Halo is the online content. Right now, the xbox is sans internet gaming. That means Xbox Halo is sans internet connectivity. Lan only, 4 tvs, 4 xboxs, 16 people. And although it hasn't been confirmed, PC/Mac Halo will have internet connectivity for multiplayer. (Bungie, or anyone, would not release a multiplayer computer game without internet MP support) Will Xbox Halo have a patch/expansion/etc that allows for internet connectivity? It's all speculation at this point. Out of the box, it won't. Oh, and there's that whole November 15, 2001 versus some unknown time in 2002 issue. I can wait for multiplayer Halo till a patch/expansion/etc; or, if one never comes, for pc halo. I'll eventually upgrade my pc to the point where it can run halo. MP is not a huge thing for me. But if internet MP is important for you, and you're a hardcore pc gamer with a shiny new killer rig.... I think it's a gamble either way. Personally, I'm getting an Xbox. The system looks good, and I think it could turn up on top of all the current run of console systems. But it's a gamble. There's no magic answer. | |
