If you only consider the grand scheme of videogames, mario 64 was either the most important game of the generation or very close. It established basically all of the conventions for 3d platformers and quite a few for 3d games in general/ : Yes, Mario64 did get excellent reviews. So does Halo. Not a SINGLE
Tony Hawk 2 and Soul Calibur got universally excellent reviews along with the aforementioned Mario 64.
