Re: Date reconciliation...

In Response To: Date reconciliation... (Ape Man)

: This remains to be seen. The dates are awfully tight, but they CAN be
: reconciled, if you figure a blitzkrieg of colonisation (and a blitzkrieg
: of sex on the colonists' part). Say the Marathon leaves in 2472; the first
: date mentioned in Halo: The Fall of Reach is 2517. At that point, there
: are already quite a few well-established colonies (some with populations
: of well over one million, and Reach, seemingly the largest, with several
: million). It's cutting it a bit close; say FTL was developed in secret.
: Even then, the earliest it could be put to use would 2472 or 2473, right
: after the Marathon's launch. Colonisation could have begun immediately;
: that would leave forty years for the colonies to reach their current size
: in 2517. Possible, but difficult. That's either a lot of transport ships,
: or a whole lot of sex. Each vessel would probably be able to carry 5,000
: colonists, max. For 5,000 to become 1,000,000 in two generations would
: mean that each family would have to have an average of 100 children.
: Ramses could do it, but Ramses has been dead for 4,000 years at this
: point. So there would have to be more than one ship per colony. Ten ships
: would be the minimum. With a base of fifty thousand, if each family had an
: average of 10 children, the population could rise to 1,000,000 in two
: generations. Still a lot sex, placing the likely number of vessels closer
: to 20 or even 30. Once again...feasible, but not likely.

: The other Marathon tie-ins in the novel are blurry at best; they mentioned
: "Mark I" Mjolnir suits, but they give no date, and they seem to
: have failed horribly. Just for clarification; the soldiers themselves are
: called SPARTANS. The armor they wear is called Mjolnir. What mark the
: Mjolnir suits are, I haven't heard yet. It might be mentioned later in the
: book (I'm about half way through). And there is one reference to a
: "Mars massacre lost in the history books". The Misriah Massacre,
: perhaps?

: Food for thought.

If they had some faster than light travel then, and they were colonizing other planets because the population of earth was getting quite large, wouldnt it be feasible for them to be shuttling people back and fourth off earth and dumping them onto colonies at a fairly rapid pace? That could account for the high populations on some worlds pretty easily.
