Something similar popped up here a while back when someone used Halo machinima to re-enact the Virginia Tech massacre. Ignoring my reaction to the subject matter of this piece of machinima, I just want to say that this sheds more light on how we bring our own feelings to the things we see. I don't think very many of us would be offended if Halo was used to dramatize a roman battle or storming the beach at Normandy, yet other things seems completely inappropriate, no matter how 'delicately' or 'seriously' the creator's intention. If I had to defend the creator I'd say that for today's youth the Halo series has been around with any serious mainstream penetration (that's what she said) about 5-6 years. For folks playing consoles at the age of 12-13 near the beginning of that period, they've seen Halo used as a 'language' for a large chunk of their formative academic years. It wouldn't be surprising for them to sincerely think of Halo as a tool to communicate something in what they would find to be a natural toolset, but still expect others to find fresh and creative - therefore impressive and worthy of an exceptional grade. Would you blame him/her for trying? - M
