I thought it was better than the vast majority of machinima that's been made to date.

Given that you hated it (and it's clear, now, that your words were not overstating that case), I had trouble (still do, in fact) seeing how you could have much in the way of positive feedback to offer ANY machinima writers. Simple associative property, I guess - if A > (most of B), and you hate A, then you must hate most of B.

Defensive? I'm not sure why that would be - I have no stake in ANY machinima writing; I don't get involved in the production side of any of this stuff.

Hostile? Yes, probably. You posted the note that started this, along with this one in the span of about a minute yesterday - which got me to thinking about your general demeanor here.

And I realized that you're rarely positive about fan work. (In fact, I was quite surprised by this.)

Can people be productive members of society (or, in a more relevant sense, a community) while being negative? Sure. Can they do so when they're negative 90+% of the time? No, not really. (This is why, for what it's worth, I've been sniping at Psychophan7 recently - he, too, has little to add that's not negative.)

So yeah, I guess there was some hostility - born of the fact that your general input to this forum is more negative than positive. That I haven't expressed it before is simply due to the fact that I didn't really put it all together before yesterday.
