If you die : in a light area and spawn in a light area, this does not happen. Maybe : it's just me, but I think when you come back to life, where you died : shouldn't have an affect on what you see. Gamma shifts are retained from spawn to spawn. Your camera has adjusted your exposure settings to optimally have a nice even histogram. When you respawn, those settings stick around.
