: benefit the fans, and better the game... why not?

I'd have thought the answer was obvious. The only reason people keep harping on it is that they want what they want and they don't really care about what the reasons are they don't get it. The reason is tyranny of the majority. Players who like less popular gametypes would actually have fewer chances to play the games they like than they do now, since games accessible through the server browser would likely contain fewer of those games than matchmaking gives them.

Anybody left trying to get those games in matchmaking would also get fewer chances to play with more delays, as the time it takes matchmaking to assemble a party is directly related to the number of players available, and every player browsing by server is not available for matchmaking.

In short, the addition of a server browser would serve to make all the popular gametypes even more popular at the expense of the inclusion of lesser popular gametypes, which might all but disappear, because there'd be hardly any of those games in the server browser, and not enough players to create matches for those games in matchmaking.

Matchmaking is the best way of making sure that on a fairly regular basis, everybody gets at least some of what they like. Nobody will ever be 100% happy with all of the map and gametype selections in any particular hopper. If a majority don't like a selection, they can veto.

There already is a way to opt out of matchmaking. It's called your friends list. Play in matchmaking. Talk to people. Find those who like the same gametypes you do. Send them a friend request. Repeat until you have enough to play whatever games you like on a regular basis. It's really not that hard.

The other thing I find odd about this complaint is that the vast majority of players seem to prefer Slayer or some variant over just about anything else. And the majority of games are Slayer. Yet it is the fans of Slayer who seem to want the Server Browser functionality so they can avoid ever having to play an objective gametype. Whereas those who prefer objective gametypes end up playing an awful lot of slayer in matchmaking and don't seem to complain nearly as much.

There's just no pleasing some people. I suppose it is Bungie's fault here for being responsive enough to its fans to consider implementing such a feature, since it seems no one is going to ever forgive them for deciding it wasn't workable.
