As I understand it, the mapfiles for the Halo 3 maps are limited and already defined. They can't be edited (Stuff can't be aded to a list) because the files have been committed to the plastic of your gamedisc. So, Old maps won't get new stuff. But since the new maps are entirely on your HD, the mapfiles can be updated and patched for them. It's not likely, but it's 100% doable. The problems with that,, though are in the fact that everyone would need an updated file on their own HD before they could play any maps that use new items. That's a logistics issue.
