Why does every map require a complete facelift?

Teleporters don't necessarily need to be replaced with mancannons. Doorways don't need to be replaced with shield doors. The geometry doesn't need to be made more complex and the level doesn't need to be "themed."

I really miss the more surreal levels in Halo that had little or no context. Hang 'Em High, Chill Out, Prisoner. They had no context, no place in the Halo universe, and simply focused on gameplay. Unlike the levels we have today, they were visually simple and made multiplayer easier on the eyes. Today, with all these heavily textured and detailed multiplayer maps, every scene is incredibly busy. Every level now has a context, a place in the Halo universe somehow, as if any of this really needs to tie in at all.

Levels that look simple don't necessarily look bad. Many of the levels from Halo 1 still look great because of their simplistic approach to detail, which in the end makes the level more playable.
