And even if the Chief had died at that battle, he'd simply be put down as MIA. Though we know otherwise, that he was very much alive at the end of that battle. Though with his hasty departure, it's easy to understand why a lot of the marines that stayed behind to defend Earth might believe he died there or elsewhere. Interesting though that he would have a gravesite. I'd think it would be more publically referred to as a monument than an actual grave. But then, at the end of Halo 3 and with no Spartans remaining, the war over, I can see how a gravesite for a man that had been missing several years now might be considered appropriate.
