In Response To: Bungie to Leave Microsoft? (Nijhazer) Not entirely sure why its so unbelievable for some. Of course Microsoft would like to maintain the status quo, keep Bungie developing titles for them, extending the sure thing that is Halo's success. The problem is, they own the IP for Halo, and the Bungie identity, not the employees. Brand is everything, so if Bungie employees were to leave they'd have to essentially start over like Alex Seropian did. Not an ideal situation for them, but it would be workable. On the other hand Microsoft would have a viable IP, and valuable corporate brand, but no one developing it. True, Microsoft could have another studio develop Halo, or fill their Bungie studios with new talent, but it wouldn't be the same. Quake players wouldn't flock to the IP if Carmack and Id weren't actually developing it. So if there is indeed a desire for Bungie to do something other than develop Halo titles for Microsoft, now that the trilogy is "done", its a perfect time to separate, and it would be in the best interest for both to come to an amicable arrangement. Bungie would get to keep their identity and Microsoft would get to keep a friendly developer, possibly keeping the Halo franchise alive longer. A move could be motivated by wanting to do something new (non halo), either on the Xbox or multi-platform. An even more base reason might be in terms of how much more profitable Bungie could be (even as a newly named game studio) developing games independently of Microsoft. Remember this is the group of people (mostly) that unanimously left Chicago to follow the "company" to Redmond. So if Jason Jones were to decide to start anew, its not without precedent that much if not all of Bungie would follow. It would then be in Microsoft's best interest to work out something agreeable to both parties. Afterall, this is the company that made the Xbox what it is today. my $0.03 but its not completely out of the realm of possibility.
