As far as I can tell, it's supposed to be a sort of futuristic analogue of World War II. Both conflicts were ideological struggles between three factions: democracy (the Allies/United Nations), communism (the Soviet Union/Koslovics) and fascism (the Nazis/Friedens), and both were played out across all of human-controlled territory (Earth/Sol system).
