In Response To: Halo 3 release date clue? (Stuntmutt)

I overlooked this thread, but I just wanted to comment briefly on this subject.

Does anyone really think these people know any more than we do about when Halo 3 is coming out? All the retailers are in the dark about the release date and have been releasing numerous conflicting dates, so it stands to reason that some third-party merchandiser doesn't know either. I doubt Bungie even has a release date or even a target month planned quite yet — the game could come out in the Summer for all we know, which is not unreasonable since that's when game releases start to pick up — so September is likely just a projection that WizKids is making (in fact, they do say "expected to be released" rather than "will be released"), and said projection is based on the assumption that Halo 3 will come out in November.

Of course, that assumption, like that of a lot of fans, is based largely upon a supposed "trend" wherein Halo games are released in November. However, a sample size of two is hardly a solid basis for establishing a pattern. Furthermore, the assumption is based on the erroneous belief that Halo releases have been historically released in November as part of a preset plan. Halo 1 was a launch title, so would have come out whenever the Xbox did, which just so happened to be in November. Halo 2's release date was a final deadline. It simply couldn't come out later than Nov '04 (most likely due to the impending release of the 360), but could've easily come out earlier if Bungie hadn't run into the development snags they did with Halo 2 (see the Making Of documentary on the SE's DVD of H2). Finally, people often assume that every major title comes out in the Fall, or more specifically November. However, just from last year we have quite a few notable titles that came out in the Spring and Summer, including Oblivion, Final Fantasy XI (360 version; PS2 version came out 3/04), Madden '07, Dead Rising, Saint's Row, & Okami. While October and November do have a higher number of releases than the Spring and Summer months, it is far from a guarantee that any given big-name title will release in the Fall. The Spring release of the beta (Spring lasts from late March to late June, which is a rather large window) says nothing about Halo 3's release date other than it won't see release within the next three or four months. Given how far along Bungie appears to be, as well as comparing Halo 3's development to that of the previous games, I find a Summer release just as likely as a Fall release, if not more so. We could see Halo 3 in August, October, or any other month in the latter half of the year. If Bungie does finish the game early enough for a a Summer release, I honestly doubt they'd sit on the game for several more months just to release it in November.

In the end, nobody besides Bungie has a clue when Halo 3 will ship, and any dates provided by merchandisers and retailers should be taken with a grain of salt. Halo 3 will come out no sooner and no later than Bungie sees fit. Period.
